Nebraska Man Charged with Wire Fraud and Money Laundering in Elaborate Cryptojacking Scheme

Nebraska resident Charles O. Parks III has found himself in hot water after being charged with wire fraud, money laundering, and the operation of an unlicensed money-transmitting business. Parks is accused of running a sophisticated ‘cryptojacking’ scheme, utilizing cloud-based computing services to mine cryptocurrencies worth approximately $1 million.

According to the United States Department of Justice, Parks allegedly managed to siphon off over $3.5 million worth of computing services from two major cloud providers as part of his schemes. The indictment details how Parks registered multiple accounts under aliases like “MultiMillionaire LLC” and “CP3O LLC” to access significant computing power without payment, which was used to mine digital currencies such as Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Monero (XMR).

Parks is facing charges for exploiting the cloud providers’ systems to obtain higher service levels and delay billing to avoid immediate detection of his fraudulent activities. He allegedly evaded providers’ inquiries about unusual data usage and unpaid fees, prolonging the fraud.

The illicit gains from the mining operations were reportedly laundered through various channels, including crypto-exchanges, NFT markets, an online payment provider, and regular bank accounts. This was done to conceal the source of the funds and circumvent federal law transaction reporting requirements. Parks claimed that the laundered funds were used for extravagant purchases, such as luxury vehicles, jewelry, and high-end travel accommodations.

Parks was arrested on April 13, 2024, and is set to appear in court in Omaha on April 16. If found guilty on all charges, he could face up to 10 years in prison for illegal monetary transactions and 20 years for each count of money laundering and wire fraud.

The case is being prosecuted by the National Security and Cybercrime Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew Reich and Artie McConnell leading the charge. The collaboration between the FBI’s New York Cyber Crimes Task Force and other law enforcement agencies highlights the importance of multi-agency cooperation in combating cybercrime.

Law enforcement officials are committed to tackling cyber fraud on a large scale, with FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge James Smith emphasizing the need to address the financial losses caused by criminals leveraging advanced technology. New York Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban echoed this sentiment, underscoring the vital role of public and private cooperation in identifying and apprehending cybercriminals.

As the case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with crypto fraud and the ongoing efforts to combat such illicit activities in the digital realm.
