Kenyan Authorities in Talks with Nigerian Government for Extradition of Binance Executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla
Kenyan authorities are in talks with the Nigerian government for the extradition of escapee Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, according to a new report by TechCabal. Anjarwalla escaped detention in Nigeria, prompting the Nigerian government to officially request his extradition from Kenya.
An unnamed detective at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the extradition requests but explained that the process would involve both countries. “You cannot just walk in and arrest him based on the request. It’s a process. Also, the Anjarwallas are influential and have the backing of some powerful people,” the detective said.
The report also raised the possibility of a red notice or foreign arrest warrant being issued for Anjarwalla. The detective emphasized that police agencies collaborate through Interpol, but the execution of a red notice or foreign arrest warrant is a separate matter.
The extradition process for Anjarwalla would require a Nigerian court to issue an arrest warrant, which would then be sent to Kenya’s attorney general. The court’s consent would also be necessary, a step that could take months. Anjarwalla is the son of Atiq Arjarwalla, a prominent figure in East Africa.
The Nigerian government had previously arrested two Binance executives on money laundering charges related to naira exchanges on the platform. One of the executives, Gambaryan, pleaded not guilty. The cryptocurrency community has rallied behind Gambaryan, calling for his release from custody.
As the extradition process unfolds, the case highlights the complexities of international law enforcement and the challenges of extraditing individuals across borders. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
