Akowe, a Lagos-based startup, has developed a blockchain-based platform for issuing verifiable academic records, aiming to solve the issue of inaccessible academic certificates in regions with limited infrastructure.

Founded by Ayodeji Agboola, Akowe is part of TechCrunch Disrupt’s 2023 Startup Battlefield 200 and has gained attention for its innovative approach to digital certificate verification systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Agboola highlighted the demand for such systems in the region, citing the reluctance of universities to reissue lost certificates and the need for a more efficient verification process.

The idea for Akowe stemmed from Agboola’s experience running a digital marketing business and training small business owners in using Facebook. When the need arose to verify completion of the training program, Agboola saw an opportunity to create a solution using blockchain technology. By uploading certificate templates and recipient names to the platform, organizations can generate digital copies of academic records that are securely stored on the blockchain.

While Akowe initially used Hyperledger for its blockchain solution, the startup is now exploring Amazon’s QLDB database for enhanced record management. Agboola emphasized the importance of blockchain’s immutability and security in ensuring the authenticity of academic credentials.

Despite the technological advancements, Akowe faces challenges in user acquisition, particularly in navigating the bureaucratic processes of public universities. Agboola noted the negative perception of blockchain in some institutions due to its association with cryptocurrencies, prompting the startup to focus on emphasizing the platform’s security and privacy features instead.

As Akowe continues to expand its partnerships with universities and refine its platform, the startup remains committed to leveraging blockchain technology to streamline academic record verification and address the unique challenges faced in sub-Saharan Africa. With a vision to make blockchain a practical utility for users, Akowe is poised to make a significant impact in the education sector in the region.
