Changpeng “CZ” Zhao Seeks Probation in Sentencing Hearing: Defense Team Cites Crypto Community Support and Non-Violent Offense
Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao is making headlines once again, this time for asking the court to grant him probation in his upcoming sentencing hearing. Despite US prosecutors seeking a 36-month prison sentence, Zhao’s defense team is arguing that he should be given probation due to being a first-time, non-violent offender with no intention to harm anyone.
In a sentencing memorandum submitted on behalf of CZ, his attorneys outlined several factors supporting their request for probation. These factors include the nature and circumstances of the offense, CZ’s personal history and circumstances, his extraordinary acceptance of responsibility, and the need to avoid sentencing disparities.
The defense team also highlighted the support CZ has received from the crypto community, with hundreds of letters from family, friends, and industry colleagues advocating for probation. Notable figures such as BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes and Tron founder Justin Sun have also expressed their support for CZ.
If granted probation, CZ could potentially serve his sentence under home confinement in Abu Dhabi, where he currently resides. The defense team argues that this would be a more appropriate and fair outcome for CZ, given his contributions to the industry and his commitment to charity and education initiatives.
As the sentencing hearing approaches on April 30, all eyes will be on the court’s decision regarding the fate of Changpeng “CZ” Zhao. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
