Binance Executive Nadeem Anjarwalla Found in Kenya, Extradition Talks Underway
Nadeem Anjarwalla, the Binance executive who managed to escape from custody in Nigeria, has been located in Kenya, according to a source within the presidency who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), along with the International Criminal Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Kenyan Police Service, are currently in discussions to expedite Anjarwalla’s extradition back to Nigeria.
The EFCC chairman, Ola Olukuyede, had previously stated that the commission was working closely with INTERPOL, as well as authorities in the US, UK, Northern Ireland, and Kenya to bring Anjarwalla to justice. Anjarwalla, along with Binance Holdings Limited and Tigran Gambaryan, faced charges of tax evasion, currency speculation, and money laundering. The trio was arraigned on April 4, 2024.
Anjarwalla had managed to escape custody on March 22 and had been on the run ever since. The Nigerian government confirmed that the EFCC had taken over the case from the Office of the National Security Adviser. The government had been cracking down on Binance for months due to its alleged involvement in manipulating the country’s foreign exchange market.
During a recent meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee, the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, revealed that over $26 billion had been funneled through Binance without a trace. The case has garnered significant attention and the authorities are working diligently to ensure Anjarwalla faces justice for his alleged crimes.
