Interpol Proposes Silver Notice to Recover Stolen Funds from Corrupt Politicians and Criminals
The Vice-President of the International Criminal Police Organisation for Africa, Garba Umar, has announced a groundbreaking initiative to help trace and recover stolen funds from corrupt politicians and criminals. Umar revealed that Interpol is proposing a silver notice that will make it impossible for individuals who have stolen money to hide their proceeds.
Speaking at a workshop on the fight against financial crime in Abuja, Umar emphasized the importance of international cooperation in combating financial crimes. He stated, “We are bringing what we call silver notice. The silver notice will trace wherever the funds are, the money that was stolen by corrupt leaders, corrupt politicians, and corrupt individuals, criminals.”
Umar highlighted the significance of the silver notice in tracking and repatriating stolen funds through legal and diplomatic channels. He urged law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts against financial crime and emphasized the importance of integrating into the I-247 facility for global cooperation.
The Director of Interpol Financial Crime Anti-Corruption Center, Isaac Ogini, announced that the silver notice initiative would kick off in January 2025, targeting asset recovery and tracing of assets. Ogini expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for their support in implementing the initiative.
In response, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, reiterated the agency’s commitment to preventing corruption and effectively tackling financial crimes. He emphasized the importance of prevention in combating corruption and highlighted the agency’s efforts to restrategize its operations.
The introduction of the silver notice by Interpol marks a significant step towards combating financial crimes and holding corrupt individuals accountable for their actions. With international cooperation and innovative initiatives like the silver notice, the fight against financial crime is set to become more effective and efficient.
