Wasabi Wallet Developer Blocks U.S. Users Amidst Regulatory Concerns
Wasabi Wallet, a popular open-source Bitcoin wallet known for its privacy-enhancing features, has made a controversial decision to block users from the United States indefinitely. The developer behind the wallet, zkSNACKs, implemented an IP address firewall to prevent U.S. users from accessing their services, including Wasabi Wallet and related products.
The company cited “recent announcements by U.S. authorities” as the reason for this drastic measure, although the specifics were not disclosed in their announcement. One possible explanation could be the recent arrests of the founders of Samourai Wallet, a competitor of Wasabi Wallet, on charges related to enabling money laundering through their privacy features.
This move by zkSNACKs comes amidst a crackdown by U.S. authorities on privacy-enhancing tools in the cryptocurrency space. The founders of Tornado Cash, a mixing protocol on the Ethereum blockchain, were also recently arrested, further fueling concerns within the industry about the legal implications of developing and using privacy-focused technologies.
Industry advocacy groups have raised concerns about the potential chilling effect these arrests could have on open-source developers, arguing that the prosecution of individuals for creating privacy tools could infringe on free-speech rights. However, the Department of Justice has taken a hardline stance, asserting that profiting from the use of mixing services by criminals constitutes money laundering.
zkSNACKs has not provided further comment on their decision to block U.S. users, leaving many in the cryptocurrency community speculating about the future of privacy-focused tools in the face of increasing regulatory scrutiny.
