Shomari Figures Wins Alabama Democratic Runoff with Crypto Industry Support

Shomari Figures, a Washington insider with a strong progressive background, has emerged victorious in the Democratic runoff for Alabama’s U.S. House of Representatives seat, thanks in part to significant support from the cryptocurrency industry.

Despite not leading in direct contributions, Figures secured 61% of the vote in a crowded field of Democratic candidates. The key difference may have been the $2.7 million in support from Protect Progress, a political action committee (PAC) backed by the crypto industry. This “dark money” spending, which is not officially part of the campaign, helped Figures stand out as a candidate who supports innovation and job creation through digital assets like cryptocurrency.

Figures, who has experience in the Obama administration and worked for Senator Sherrod Brown, made his stance on digital assets clear on his campaign website. This caught the attention of Protect Progress, which targeted him with a substantial amount of support in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District.

The PAC’s backing, which is the most they have given to a Democratic candidate so far, highlights the growing influence of the crypto industry in political campaigns. Companies like Ripple Labs and Coinbase, along with prominent investors, are throwing their support behind candidates who align with their interests.

While Figures’ opponents may have had more direct contributions, the backing from Protect Progress proved to be a game-changer in this race. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it’s clear that support from the crypto industry can make a significant impact on election outcomes.
